Like many of you I could cut and paste whole songs, but what couplet or quatrain is always near your thoughts?

Desolation Row->

Cinderella, she seems so easy
"It takes one to know one," she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets
Bette Davis style

Gotta Serve Somebody->

Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed.
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed...

Far between sundown's finish an' midnight's broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway as thunder went crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing
Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An' for each an' ev'ry underdog soldier in the night
An' we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

She lit the burner on the stove
and offered me a pipe
I thought you'd never say hello, she said
you look like the silent type
She opened up a book of poems
and handed it to me
written by an Italian Poet in the 13th century
And every one of those words rang true
and glowed like burnin' coals
rollin' off of every page like it was written in my soul
from me to you....

Apologies to Bob, I wrote it the way Jerry said it.

She's got no place to fall.
So many to choose from..

"She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She's nobody's child,
The Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She's a hypnotist collector,
You are a walking antique."

and the rest of She Belongs To Me

"My love winks, she does not bother,
She knows too much to argue or to judge."

"When she said,"Don't waste
your words, they're just lies,"
I cried she was deaf.
And she worked on my face
until breaking my eyes,
Then said, "What else you got left?"
It was then that I got up to leave
But she said, "Don't forget,
Everybody must give something back
For something they get.""

Well, I had to go down and see a guy named Mr. Goldsmith
A nasty, dirty, double-crossin’, backstabbin’ phony I didn’t wanna have to be dealin’ with
But I did it for you and all you gave me was a smile
Well, I cried for you—now it’s your turn to cry awhile

I don’t carry deadweight—I’m no flash in the pan
All right, I’ll set you straight, can’t you see I’m a union man?
I’m lettin’ the cat out of the cage, I’m keeping a low profile
Well, I cried for you—now it’s your turn, you can cry awhile

Feel like a fighting rooster—feel better than I ever felt
But the Pennsylvania line’s in an awful mess and the Denver road is about to melt
I went to the church house, every day I go an extra mile
Well, I cried for you—now it’s your turn, you can cry awhile

Last night ’cross the alley there was a pounding on the walls
It must have been Don Pasqualli makin’ a two A.M. booty call
To break a trusting heart like mine was just your style
Well, I cried for you—now it’s your turn to cry awhile

I’m on the fringes of the night, fighting back tears that I can’t control
Some people they ain’t human, they got no heart or soul
Well, I’m crying to the Lord—I’m tryin’ to be meek and mild
Yes, I cried for you—now it’s your turn, you can cry awhile

Well, there’s preachers in the pulpits and babies in the cribs
I’m longin’ for that sweet fat that sticks to your ribs
I’m gonna buy me a barrel of whiskey—I’ll die before I turn senile
Well, I cried for you—now it’s your turn, you can cry awhile

Well, you bet on a horse and it ran on the wrong way
I always said you’d be sorry and today could be the day
I might need a good lawyer, could be your funeral, my trial
Well, I cried for you, now it’s your turn, you can cry awhile

'Imagine' wants me to immediately find a 30 gallon Super-Hefty bag for all the vomit and bile that's coming up. What an insipid, childish song. That it has become a touchstone of 'spirituality' makes me glad I went with the 30 gallon size. The only song I do like post '66 is this, probably b/c my father wore the grooves out on it.

Funny, but our firm has this "Golden Banana" award which they give our periodically to someone that did something good on case. No cash or anything, but you get a little monkey that sits on a wooden block with a bananana and over the years little items get added. Last time around I sent out the VU album cover in an email to congratulate the winner and our demure, little old lady librarian sent me back an email telling me how she loves that album. I then told her I have an original banana sticker album framed at home, and I looked at her differently after her response:

wow, that is really neat. to have any Warhol framed on your wall is so cool. so many of the albums lost their banana peel entirely, or they were so badly worn they didn't look that great. Now I have a "Best of Warhol" CD that I play sometimes and still have my trusty turntable. Nico rules :) and I must admit I really like how the song "Heroin" builds and builds up in intensity and "I'm waitin' for my man, 26 dollars in my hand" another favorite. anyway.... "that's my story".

The old man is getting back in the saddle (feeling a little frisky today) and the kids are growing like corn, missus getting by. Been a rough spring. But we move on.

WTA kicked Sony Erickson to below the fold so to speak. I think women tennis athletes are the best in the world, by far. At times 3+ hours on court with no hugs (coaches on the court is just stupid and insulting). They replayed one point by Wozniacki where she ran 160 Yards(!) and lost the point. I know it's clay, but she has to get an offense weapon if she wants a major. Kim lost today. :-(

Imagine what the little librarian did while listening to Run, Run, Run or Venus in Furs. Shiny boots of leather indeed. Sorry for the image.

Can you invite me over one day? Tour the office, see some memorabilia, meet the family (I agree with your assessment about Slavic ladies. Passionate. Whew!), go see a show at a club. I'm really an excellent guest. :-)

I love Heroin (the song). Cale recounts playing this at a HS in NJ in '65 , among other songs from the Banana album. Wonder what those boys and girls thought? He said no one danced or clapped. He also felt they were a bit too young for such fare. Indeed. You are a lucky man to have intact Warhol art. An intact banana as well! Have you seen this,
13 Most Beautiful... Songs for Andy Warhol's Screen Tests.
It's on Netflix instant. I assume you have a copy of Drella.
This is such a beautiful, ugly, maelstrom of a song. Andy said it was just beautiful.

Heroin

I don't know just where I'm going

But I'm gonna try for the kingdom, if I can

'Cause it makes me feel like I'm a man

When I put a spike into my vein

And I'll tell ya, things aren't quite the same

When I'm rushing on my run

And I feel just like Jesus' son

And I guess that I just don't know

And I guess that I just don't know

I have made the big decision

I'm gonna try to nullify my life

'Cause when the blood begins to flow

When it shoots up the dropper's neck

When I'm closing in on death

And you can't help me now, you guys

And a

You can all go take a walk

And I guess that I just don't know

And I guess that I just don't know

I wish that I was born a thousand years ago

I wish that I'd sail the darkened seas

On a great big clipper ship

Going from this land here to that

In a sailor's suit and cap

Away from the big city

Where a man can not be free

Of all of the evils of this town

And of himself, and those around

Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Oh, and I guess that I just don't know

Heroin, be the death of me

Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life

Because a mainer to my vein

Leads to a center in my head

And then I'm better off and dead

Because when the smack begins to flow

I really don't care anymore

About all the Jim-Jim's in this town

And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds

And everybody puttin' everybody else down

And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds

'Cause when the smack begins to flow

Then I really don't care anymore

Ah, when the heroin is in my blood

And that blood is in my head

Then thank God that I'm as good as dead

Then thank your God that I'm not aware

And thank God that I just don't care

And I guess I just don't know

And I guess I just don't know

and you have an open invite whenever you get out this way to the crumbling, decaying, bankrupt golden state. Recalls the line by Dennis Hopper (who made a nice Leo Castelli to Bowie's Warhol in Basquiat) in River's Edge that "California is like a beautiful junky - she's dying, but doesn't see the scars" (or something to that effect). "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall"

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son ?
And where have you been my darling young one ?
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans
I've been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard
And it's a hard, it's a hard, it's a hard, and it's a hard
It's a hard rain's a-gonna fall.

"It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)"

Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying.

Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fools gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proved to warn
That he not busy being born
Is busy dying.

Hey JOTS - I'm listening to Oh Mercy! now, which I recall you got on my radar after singing its praises awhile back.

My favorite Dylan lyrics are Floater (Too Much To Ask), but they don't lend themselves to single stanzas or snippets. They weave a kind of southern American tapestry that is gorgeous & and 'old-timey' in a similar vein to Brown Eyed Women, Cumberland Blues, UJB, etc.

'm in Boston town, in some restaurant
I got no idea what I want
Or maybe I do but, I'm just really not sure
Waitress comes over, nobody in the place but me and her.

Well, it must be a holiday, there's nobody around
She studies me closely as I sit down
She got a pretty face, with long white shiny legs
I said, "Tell me what I want," she say, "You probably want hard boiled eggs."

I say, "That's right, bring me some."
She says, "We ain't got any, you picked the wrong time to come."
Then she says, "I know you're an artist, draw a picture of me."
I said, "I would if I could but I don't do sketches from memory."

Well, she then, she says, "I'm right here in front of you, or
haven't you looked?"
I say, "All right, I know but I don't have my drawing book."
She gives me a napkin, she say, "You can do it on that."
I say, "Yes I could but I don't know where my pencil is at."

She pulls one out from behind her ear
She says, "All right now go ahead, draw me, I'm stayin' right here."
I make a few lines and I show it for her to see
Well, she takes her napkin and throws it back and says, "That
don't look a thing like me."

I said, "Oh, kind Miss, it most certainly does."
She say, "You must be jokin'," I say, "I wish I was."
Then she says, "You don't read women authors do ya?" at least
that's what I think I hear her say
Well, I said, "How would you know and what would it matter anyway?"

Well she says, "You just don't seem like you do." I said,
"You're way wrong."
She says "Which ones have you read then?" I say, "I've read
Erica Jong."
She goes away for a minute and I slide out, out of my chair
I step outside back to the busy street but nobody is goin' anywhere.

A lot of you have quoted the ones I might have picked, but there is too many .
I could have chosen many . This "Highlands" quote is just so mutedly funny, and bizzare . If I was being alittle more thoughful, migh pick something from John Westly Harding .
...also kudos to grendelschoice for picking "Cloths Line Saga ...
“Have you heard the news?” he said, with a grin
“The Vice-President’s gone mad!”
“Where?” “Downtown.” “When?” “Last night”
“Hmm, say, that’s too bad!”

I took my wife, then girlfriend, to see dylan in prague in 94 (I think '94) and she went but wasn't that interested because she didn't "know" any of his songs, only to realize during the show that many of his tunes that night were ones she'd been singing all her life as czech "folk" tunes.

Praise be to Nero's Neptune
The Titanic sails at dawn
Everybody's shouting which side are you on
And Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot
Fighting in the captain's tower
While Calypso singers laugh at them
And fishermen hold flowers

Where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much

You ought to appreciate this -

All of Gates of Eden and It's Alright, Ma, especially:

Old lady judges watch people in pairs
Limited in sex, they dare
To push fake morals, insult and stare
While money doesn’t talk, it swears
Obscenity, who really cares
Propaganda, all is phony

While them that defend what they cannot see
With a killer’s pride, security
It blows the minds most bitterly
For them that think death’s honesty
Won’t fall upon them naturally
Life sometimes must get lonely

My eyes collide head-on with stuffed
Graveyards, false gods, I scuff
At pettiness which plays so rough
Walk upside-down inside handcuffs
Kick my legs to crash it off
Say okay, I have had enough, what else can you show me?

"The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face...where these visions of Johanna have now taken my place."

"Einstein disguised as Robin Hood, with his memories in a trunk, passed this way an hour ago with his friend--a jealous monk. Oh, he looked so immaculately frightful, as he bummed a cigarette...then he went off sniffing drainpipes and reciting the alphabet. You would not think to look at him but he was famous long ago--for playing the electric violin on Desolation Row."

"I've made shoes for everyone, even you, but I still go barefoot." (I and I)

She said 'where you been'?
I said 'No place special.'
She said 'You look different.'
I said 'well, i guess.'
She said 'you been gone.'
I said 'It's only natural.'
She said 'You gonna stay?'
I said 'If you want me to...yes.'
(Isis)

I reached up, and touched my shirt, and the neighbor said 'Are those clothes yours?'
I said 'Some of 'em, not all of 'em', and he said 'You always help out around here with the chores?'
I said 'Some of the time, not all of the time', and my neighbor he blew his nose...just as Papa yelled outside 'Mama wants you to come on in the house and bring them clothes!'
Well, I just do what I'm told...so I did it of course...I went back in the house and Mama met me, and I shut all the doors.
(Clothes Line Saga)

"Yes that's the story of the Hurricane, but it won't be over til they clear his name...and give him back the time he's done...put in a prison cell but one time he coulda been the Champion of the World."

"Now the rain man gave me two kilos, and he said 'Jump right in'...the one was Texas medicine...the other was just railroad gin...and like a fool I mixed them, and it strangled up my mind...and now people just get uglier, and I have no sense of time..."

"Look at the sun, sinking like a ship...look at the sun, sinking like a ship...aint that just like my heart, babe--when you kiss my lips?"

"Now the winter time is coming, the windows are filled with frost. I went to tell everybody but I could not get across. Well, I wanna be your lover baby, I don't want to be your boss. Don't say I never warned you, when your train gets lost."

(I'll be here all day if I don't stop now. No wonder Jerry loved covering his songs.)

Abandoned Love
Everybody's wearing a disguise
To hide what they've got left behind their eyes

Every Grain of Sand
I gaze into the doorway of temptations angry flame
And every time I pass that way I always hear my name
Then onward in my journey I came to understand
That every hair is numbered like every grain of sand

Subterranean Homesick Blues
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid

Dylan paints a great story in Tangled. Classic clip here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwSZvHqf9qM

I muttered somethin' underneath my breath,
She studied the lines on my face.
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe,
Tangled up in blue.
